Why are Dedicated Servers dead?

Q&A of Dedicated Servers

There are 3 main reasons:

  • • Many hosting companies are not ashamed of deploying old & obsolete hardware! Does anybody notice that their dedicated servers are using Intel Atom® processors? These kind of processors are used in Tablets...! 💩
  • • The demand for Dedicated Servers is going down, and the supply keeps going up. The growth of Cloud Hosting is spectacular: with more than 90 data centers closing down this year (2018). It has been reported in 2014 that the US Government has saved US$1.1bn by closing down more than 9,000 data centers. The prices are going down to try to revive the demand for Dedicated Servers. Ultimately the offers will just disappear. The premium computing power is gone already. 🚽
  • • The deployment of instances is instant. If you order a custom Dedicated Server: you will have to wait a few hours (if not the next business day or more) to gain access the resource you have already paid for. Is your time not precious?

The reliability of Dedicated Servers does not exist: hardware failure will happen (disks, CPU or memory). Any hardware failure requires a human intervention: which results in downtime with an unknown ETA. Is it really worth it?
Generous bandwidth limits are given by the Amazon AWS® Lightsail offers. Also: you should not get confused between: computing power (the usage & need of the CPU to serve data), and CDN (Content Delivery Network). If you need a lot of bandwidth: you probably need a CDN, not a dedicated server. Amazon AWS® S3 service can also be used to serve objects. The price of bandwidth is also going down every year.
None: if you max out on the resources available on your Dedicated Server, you have outgrown it (congratulations). However: now you will need to migrate your data to another server or have a hardware change (which might trigger some downtime).
To upgrade the CPU, memory or connection : it takes the time of a reboot! (~2 min). Increase of disk space is now done without downtime. That is impossible with Dedicated Servers. To change the OS (Operating System) you need to start a new instance (whereas you would need a human intervention on the physical server if you need this on a Dedicated Server).

RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is now a technology that is irrelevant. In the Cloud the redundancy is completely transparent & done automatically, you do not even have to know the brand of the disks: no more hardware consideration, colocation is dead too 👻. You can just focus on the availability rate. Currently this rate (also called “durability”) is: 99.999% on Amazon AWS® .

That is another drawback: unfortunately you cannot access the computing power of a Dedicated Server for a few minutes. Whereas with Cloud Instances: you can! The technology is so advanced now that you even have serverless language: like Amazon AWS® Lambda.
Yes it is: maintenance time is a lot lower, uptime is optimal, and you can scale your resources to suit your needs. WHM/cPanel® licenses are 50% cheaper for instances than for Dedicated Servers.
18 countries to choose from: Ireland, UK, Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Korea, Brazil, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India and Australia
If you are running production workloads on a Dedicated Server: it becomes urgent for you to migrate to the Cloud (before the collapse of many hosting operators).

Are you left behind?

DEDICATED SERVERS ITEMS TO DOUBLE CHECK

SSD or HDD?

SSD or HDD?

Most servers out there uses magnetic HDD with moving parts, and HDD are more prone to failure. Do you have backups?

Fast servers are not for others

Fast servers are not for others

Technology advances every day and everything is working faster and better. By not switching to the Cloud you are leaving your competitors ahead of you!

cPanel® Maintenance

cPanel® Maintenance

cPanel/WHM® self-updates (if it is enabled, have you checked?) however some other important maintenance may be left behind: kernel updates & patches, new security settings, ability to generate FREE SSL certificates, etc.

Low performance

Low performance

If you value uptime: you will not get a dedicated server, you will just switch to the Cloud.

Check the manufacture date of your CPU: you might be shocked~.

Neglected Maintenance

Neglected Maintenance

Most servers are sold without maintenance plans: as time goes by more & more security vulnerabilities will appear. Almost everything needs maintenance.
